Every first time triathlete has a different level of fitness and it is very difficult to be too detailed with training programmes. Also triathletes may already be proficient in one of the specific sports and therefore training in that sport is less important. We have listed some tips for finding training information you may find helpful:-

Triathlon Clubs

Local triathlon clubs are an excellent way of gaining access to training sessions and the experiences of other triathletes. The British Triathlon Federation website link below will give you your nearest triathlon club.

Internet Training Plans

The internet is full of sites offering training plans for all levels of fitness. As triathlon is made up of three disciplines there are also a host of sport specific sites full of helpful information. Most guides are promoting a training routine which involves 6-9 sessions a week, 2-3 per discipline. Perhaps the best guide we can recommend comes from the Britisih Triathlon Federation. It is an 8 week plan and carries a lot of helpful information.

Internet sites like Youtube and Myspace are also great resources of video footage of triathlons. Without actually racing you can develop an understanding for what a triathlon will be like on the day.

Coaches

For the most personalised preparation for your first triathlon a coach may be your preferred approach. Ideally the coach should be a British Triathlon accredited coach and of course you should check for current insurances. Ring your local triathlon club for a recommendation.

The swim section of a triathlon holds the greatest concern for most triathletes competing for the first time. To have the opportunity to complete a pre-race open water swim session with a wetsuit can be a great help. The Salford Quays Watersports Centre will be offering triathletes open water swim sessions every Thursday evening from 1st May this year. Registration is required with the centre before you can swim and the sessions last from 6:30-8:00pm with last entry at 7:45pm. This will mean you will have 5 opportunities to experience an open water swim before the event and get use to using your wetsuit. See the web address below for more details:-
